When it comes to traditional Shanghainese dining in this bustling city, Hong Kong Old Restaurant (香港老飯店) located in North Point’s Newton Hotel is the place to go. With wall reliefs of the Bund decorating the restaurant, this is surely a feast for the eyes and taste buds.
Highlights include the Honey Ham Buns (密汁火方) which were assembled with honeyed ham and a crispy beancurd sheet wrapped in mantou bread. It’s savory, salty, sweet, chewy and crunchy all in one bite. Don’t forget the giant fried scallion pancake (葱油饼) rolled in sesame seeds. The soft, fluffy inside contrasts the gently crisp outside of these pancake slices.
There’s also the Shark Fin Soup that is made with a cured ham and chicken stock. While this soup may not garner the love of environmental enthusiasts due to the controversy of how shark fin is harvested, it is definitely a worthwhile culinary experience to at least try once. And there’s no where better than at Hong Kong Old Restaurant that spends hours carefully preparing this soup to ensure its deep flavor profile.

It’s so hard to find a traditional restaurant these days. This is such a great recommendation. Thanks for sharing. ….Danny
Glad you liked the post, Danny!
I’m craving for any fine chinese restaurant….
btw, it is honey ham??? never heard about..
i know only hoisin ham before
It’s a thick cut of ham that is braised in a honey sauce until it’s soft and the sauce is reduced. The final result lets the sweetness complement the saltiness of the ham. Just thinking about it makes me want to have a piece of this again 🙂
